Orange Essential Oil in the Spotlight

People have lots of different opinions about essential oil aromas but I've never met anyone who doesn't like orange essential oil. One whiff and it's easy to see why people love orange (Citrus sinensis). It's bright, fruity, sunny, and fresh. Orange doesn't just smell awesome it has loads of benefits from supporting immune health, easing muscles aches, and soothing digestive upset.

Orange essential oil is cold pressed from the rind of the fruit. It's a top note and energetically it's said to comfort, inspire, and promote a sense of optimism.

Although many citrus oils can be phototoxic sweet orange is not. Sweet orange supports immune health, digestion, can soothe nausea, and calm cramps. Orange has analgesic anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-spasmodic, immunostimulent, liver supportive, sedative, and skin penetration enhancing properties due to its d-limonene content.

I like using orange essential oil in immune support blends, for uplifting mood, and for supporting digestive health.

For immune support try adding orange essential oil along with tea-tree, ravintsara, and eucalyptus to a diffuser or inhaler. Use about 4-6 drops orange, 2-4 tea tree, 2-4 ravintsara, and 2-4 eucalyptus to a diffuser or add the larger amount to an inhaler. You can also add equal amount of lavender and orange to a diffuser or inhaler for immune support. Try 3-4 drops of each in a diffuser about 8-10 each in an inhaler.

For a festive diffuser blend try mixing orange with spice oils and fir oils. I love the aroma of orange (3-4 drops) with cinnamon (1-2 drops), clove bud (1-2 drops), white or douglas fir (2-3 drops), and rosemary (1-2 drops) in the diffuser. This is a great blend to clear the air of germs and it smells wonderful. It's easy to modify the amount for your diffuser size or aroma preferences.

For digestive support that soothes cramps orange essential oil along with other soothing oils can help. A 3-5% blend would help (that means 15-30 drops per ounce of unscented lotion).

One suggestion is to add an ounce of unscented lotion to a clean jar and add 4 drops orange, 4 drops Roman Chamomile, 4 drops lavender, and 3-4 drops of sandalwood essential oils. Mix well and apply to belly and back every few hours to soothe cramping. Another option would be to add peppermint, lavender, and orange to one ounce of cream (4-5 drops of each) for cooling, soothing, digestive support. You could also use these creams to calm a headache or soothe sore muscles.

To uplift mood a blend of citrus and rosemary in a diffuser or inhaler is wonderful. Try adding 4-5 drops of orange, 4-5 drops of grapefruit, and 4-5 drops of rosemary to a diffuser or inhaler (use 15-18 drops per inhaler).

Orange essential oil can support the body in many different ways and is one of the lesser expensive essential oils that pretty much everyone loves. So be sure to break out the orange essential oil
