All in the Family... and Genus

What do lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii var. motia), and gingergrass (Cymbopogon martinii var. sofia) essential oils have in common? Well you may have noticed the similarity in their names -- they all belong to the same genus of lemongrasses native to India and Indonesia. They each belong to the poaceae or grass family. And you may have also noticed that palmarosa and gingergrass are variations of the same species. The essential oils distilled from these grasses share some similarities but they each also offer unique properties as well.

Lemongrass is probably quite familiar to many of us. It's often used in cooking and the essential oil is a familiar one. Lemongrass has a strong lemony, scent that people usually either love or strongly dislike. Lemongrass essential oil is a fantastic fungus and germ fighter and has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties but it can be a bit harsh on the skin and mucus membranes. Since it is rich in aldehydes it is recommended for use at 0.7% or less topically -- that's about three to four drops per ounce of carrier. It is also recommended to use with oils higher in d-limonene or a-pinene as they aid quenching the effects of the aldehydes. In addition to being a great germ fighter and muscle and joint soother, lemongrass is both calming and uplifting and useful during emotional transitions.

Palmarosa, on the other hand, tends to be high in monoterpenols and is lovely for supporting skin and scalp health. It can also help support the immune system and is helpful for achy muscles. It's recommended maximal topical use is 6.5% or about thirty three to thirty nine drops per ounce of carrier.

Gingergrass is excellent for easing muscle aches, supporting circulation, supporting healthy lung function, and reducing feelings of fatigue and improving mood. Awesome! It is rich in monoterpenes, esters, and monoterpenols.
