Fir Real? Balsam Fir Supports Respiratory Health, Eases Muscle and Joint Aches, and Uplifts Mood.

During the fall and winter months I love creating diffuser blends that usher in the holiday spirit. For me this means using aromas like cinnamon, peppermint, rosemary, orange, and pine or fir essential oil. Such blends just smell like a holiday kitchen.

There are loads of pine and fir oils to choose from and in this post I want to focus on balsam fir. Abies balsamea sometimes called Canadian fir has a sweet, woodsy, and uplifting aroma. It's rich in monoterpenes such as pinene, limonene, and gamma-3- carene as well as the ester bornyl acetate.

Balsam fir is often diffused to support respiratory health, fight germs, and uplift the mood and energy. Topically it is helpful to ease muscle and joint aches. And it just plain smells lovely -- like a walk in the woods.

Below are two of my favorite blends using balsam fir -- a diffuser blend and chest rub.

Holiday Diffuser Blend:

For me the combination of sweet, spicy, and woodsy just speaks "holiday" -- it's like baking cookies and cooking a holiday meal alongside the Christmas tree.

Add to a diffuser:

2 drops Rosemary essential oil

2 drops orange essential oil

2 drops Balsam fir essential oil

2 drops peppermint essential oil

1 drop cinnamon bark essential oil

Turn on diffuser and enjoy!

Balsam Fir Chest Rub:

to 1 oz of unscented cream add:

4 drops Balsam fir essential oil

4 drops Eucalyptus globulus or radiata essential oil

1 drop lavender essential oil

1 drop orange essential oil

Mix well and apply to chest and body as needed to support respiratory health or uplift mood.

Balsam fir is safe and non-toxic but can possibly cause sensitization if oxidized. Rosemary is not recommended for use on or need their face of children under 5 and should be used with caution with children 5 to 10. Old and oxidized oils may cause sensitization reaction so be sure to store your oil properly -- avoid heat, light, and oxygen.

I hope you enjoy these recipes and give balsam fir essential oil a try.
